Eventverkehr: Turning the trip and event into a "seamless experience"
Over the last decade, big events and festivities have become a significant part of leisure behaviour and travel. The journey to and from the place of the event often takes longer than the time spent at the destination. This presents a substantial challenge to provide transport facilities without disturbing the ambience or the environment of the place itself.
How can the public transport be provided to places during festivities without disturbing the atmosphere, socially acceptable and economically sustainable? How can you develop the start and departure journeys also as a part of the events experience?
The project was sponsored as a part of the research programme on "leisure transport" sponsored by the Federal ministry for education and research for the period of 2000 - 2004. The analytical and the practical aspects were analysed. The main application and focal point was the International horticultural exhibition (IGA) at Rostock in 2003. The project team consisted of 8 different members with various backgrounds. Nexus coordinated the work of the group in general, while also conducting research regarding the psychology, ergonomics, offer development, and implementation research.
Important research fields within this task were:
  • Empirical analysis of the importance of visiting events as a part of leisure travel, to understand and structure the needs of the visitors and the expectations and interests of local residents
  • Scenarios for the description of future leisure travel
  • Development of forecasting and estimation procedures for leisure travel
  • Analysis of the possibilities of planning a pleasure-based travel
  • Conception of journeys as a part of the event itself
  • Exemplary implementation of pleasure-based mobility services
The concepts could be tested in the context of the IGA Rostock 2003 event. The project group is very interested in further activities in this field. The team is offering its extensive practical and scientific expertise to event organisers, transport planners and other interested organisations.
A comprehensive overview is offered in the two books published by the project team:
das Handbuch für Eventverkehr- An- und Abreise als Teil des Events and the volume on Erfolgreiche Eventverkehre - Analysen und Fallstudien (The two books are available in german language).
Besides these books, some important parts of the projects have also been published in different journals.
